German Audi officials apparently couldn’t bear to launch their new TT in the U.S., so its official debut in Berlin preceded the 2006 New York auto show by a few days. Regardless of where you see it, the new TT still looks good, and the new-style grille and lights haven’t detracted from the bold overall shape. Wheels up to 19 inches lend an aggressive stance. Powertrains echo those in the related Audi A3, so front- or all-wheel drive will be mated to a 200-hp 2.0-liter turbo four or a 250-hp 3.2-liter V-6, respectively. Audi claims 0 to 62 mph times of 6.4 seconds for the four and 5.7 seconds for the six. The big news about the new TT is that it’s got an aluminum (69%) and steel (31%) structure to save weight and increase rigidity. Other high-tech features include available electronically adjustable damping, MMI infotainment control, and voice-activated Bluetooth phone controls. Audi typically waits ages to sell its cars in the U.S., so expect to see old-style TTs languishing on dealer lots for months or even years before this new one shows up.
